Web 2.0

Using Web 2.0 to support Teaching and Learning: Blogs & Podcasts - SYDNEY

Monday 24th May, 2010 - 9.00am-5.00pm
Using Web 2.0 to support Teaching and Learning: Blogs & Poscasts

Cliftons Training Facility, 200 George St, Sydney

We invite you to take part in a week long series of hands-on Web 2.0 workshops facilitated by Web 2.0 guru Chris Smith. Whether you are new to Web 2.0 or have been using web 2.0 for teaching and learning in your school, these highly hands on workshops are designed to be relevant and beneficial for all. Through these workshops participants will become more familiar with Web 2.0 tools, websites and applications. Participants will also be involved in ongoing discussions about how these tools could be used in classroom to support the learning of students.

  • Be better prepared as the digital education revolution – NSW program progresses to its full implementation in 2012.
  • Workshops are conducted in a fully set up and professional computer training room. Personal computers are supplied. We advise participants to use computers provided not laptops to ensure smooth running of the day.
  • Maximum of 40 delegates per session
  • A wide range of sessions available to suit all levels of experience

    Blogs in teaching and learning

    AM session: 9.00-12.15am
  • What is a Blog (Weblog), how do you make one and what can they be used for in teaching and learning? ... we will answer all of these and you will create one for yourself in real time.
  • We will also look at how to embed images, sound, video and PowerPoints into a Blog.
  • We will end the session looking at "Twitter" (micro blogging) ... which has (surprisingly) become a very powerful professional development tool for teachers.

    Podcasts in Teaching and Learning

    PM session: 1.45-5.00pm
  • Podcasts are really very simple (once you have been shown) ... they are audio (sometimes video) recordings that are put on the internet (subscribed to) and have the potential to be brilliant resources to use with students and by students of all ages.
  • We will go through the whole process of making an audio recording, editing and then putting the file on a website so it can be listened to (and subscribed to) by anyone in the world with an internet connection.
  • Subscribing to a Podcast is done using an RSS aggregator ... we will only have time to cover these briefly, if you need to know more about RSS then you are advised to attend one of the other workshops that covers this in more detail. RSS also has the capability of saving teachers a large amount of time if they need to check multiple student podcasts, blogs wikis or websites.

These sessions are designed to be of relevance to:
  • teacher librarians and classroom teachers in both primary and secondary schools and across all subject areas
  • support the work of ICT co-ordinators
  • raise awareness of practical application of web 2.0 tools in teaching and learning
  • be of interest to senior managers who wish to better their understanding of the new online tools and collaborative opportunities for teaching and learning and teacher professional development

Cost per person: Australia - $300 (plus GST)

    Registration includes:
  • Certificate of participation or completion
  • Morning tea, afternoon tea, lunch and refreshments
